Spring Concerts

by Olivia Moore '12

This spring, the Chorus and Glee Club collaborated to prepare two unique and successful concerts. The first, themed “Northern Lights”, relied on beautiful, yet unusual music by composers based in the Northern regions of the Globe. The Chorus performed a few Scandinavian tunes and collaborated with the Glee Club to present a very unusual piece by Kaija Saariaho, titled Tag Des Jahrs, sung in its native German. It is a lovely piece sung in close, dissonant harmonies with an eerie electronic tape as accompaniment. Saariaho’s music is set to the poetry of German Romantic poet Hölderlin, and despite its difficulty, the Chorus and Glee Club performed it to an appreciative audience on March 6, 2010 in Cornell’s Sage Chapel.

On April 24, 2010, the Chorus and Glee Club performed Brahms’ Schicksalslied with the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra at Ithaca College. Led by a very dynamic conductor, Lanfranco Marcelletti, the three groups produced a beautiful rendition of this famous work in front of a wonderful crowd.
